Dave Chappelle is grabbing headlines — again. And this time there’s an Elon Musk twist to the story.
The controversial comic brought the controversial Twitter and Tesla chief onstage during his performance Sunday night at San Francisco’s Chase Center—and a mixed reaction soon followed.
Chappelle acknowledged the divided response. “Cheers and boos,” he noted, according to video footage that some people have posted online. Regarding the boos, Chappelle added, “It sounds like some of the people (Musk) fired are in the audience.”
Adding to the controversy: A video posting on Twitter of the surprise appearance is no longer available. MarketWatch reached out to Twitter for clarification about the situation, but didn’t receive an immediate response.
Still, Twitter users had plenty to say about Chappelle’s decision to share a stage with Musk.
Some noted this is just the kind of reaction that Musk likes to invite. That’s “exactly what he (Musk) loves…not just boos and certainly, not just cheers. Free speech! Go Elon,” one observed.
Others were less enthusiastic about the joint appearance. “Two losers, one stage,” another said.
As for Musk, he seemed a bit stumped as to how to work the crowd. “Dave, what should I say?” he commented at one point.
Still, Chappelle remained his usual unflappable self. He even joked about a future comedic enterprise that could result from Musk’s various business ventures — specifically, his entrepreneurial space-travel efforts.
“A comedy club on Mars,” Chappelle said.
